- Folk singer Bob Dylan made the first public performance of what would become his signature song Blowin' in the Wind. The setting was Gerde's Folk City, a jazz club in New York's Greenwich Village.
- Walter Cronkite replaces Douglas Edwards as the anchorman for the CBS Evening News. Cronkite, who would be nicknamed "The Most Trusted Man in America", would anchor the news until his retirement in 1981.
