  • The American Ranger 4 satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral, at 2.50p.m. local time, with the objective of gathering data from the Moon. 
  • Transport Minister Dr. Richard Beeching initiated a study of traffic flows on all the railway lines in the UK.
  • At a motor racing meeting at Goodwood Circuit in the UK, Graham Hill won the 1962 Glover Trophy and Bruce McLaren won the 1962 Lavant Cup.
